Saturday,

Your comments are very interesting, giving me a different prospective on my ideas.

As pointed out in this (https://jfish1535.substack.com/p/permanence-and-dependability?s=w) article, the difference between independence and dependability is often just in the attitude towards what you are doing; for β€œyour family” instead of β€œyourself”. Your sister is a good example of dependability outside the home; she is doing things for others and not for herself, something which God calls us to do.

In a way, it is like marriage. Everyone is called to marry and have children, but some people are called to give up that and become priests, monks, or nuns. In the same way, the ideal is to raise your family together and live in the same place. Some people, though, are called to do other things: to change the world in a more β€œkinetic” way.

I’ve considered online college primarily because it 1) gives me the β€œmagic piece of paper” to get a job to achieve my goals (one of which might be writing, I think), 2) it gives me a chance to get this paper without losing my soul at a public school in Timbuktu, and 3) to stay close to my parish, where I want to raise my family. I believe that permanence and dependability is what will get me to those goals. On the other hand, a priest of our mutual acquaintance left home and eventually became Catholic, which might not have happened if he left home. It sometimes depends on the family situation.

Thanks,

Sunday
